Steam 1.0 check in progress
This Catacombs overview is based on previously confirmed progression and is being checked against the full release.
After unlocking the Catacombs through By the Gods, focus on getting Small Hammers before trying to clear every sealed room. Start with Lost Supplies and Skeletal Survey on Catacombs 2F, then use their Hammer rewards to open sealed routes, investigate mysteries, and reach deeper Catacombs content. Feed the Mold later gives you a Large Hammer for hardened bone barriers.
By the Gods is the legitimate secret route in. This page starts once you are already inside.
Complete By the Gods →The order that actually matters: tools first, then sealed rooms, then deeper floors.

Extreme
Your first goal is not to open every door you see. Reach Catacombs 2F and look for the early quests that reward Small Hammers.

Small Hammers are consumed when you use them to break sealed stone doors. Getting the early quest rewards first gives you reliable tools before you start spending Hammers on optional rooms.
The Catacombs do not gate you with levels. They gate you with tools, and most of those tools are used up when you open the way.
20 known stone doors
Old Stone Doors
Small Hammer is the most important early Catacombs exploration tool. Each stone door consumes one Hammer when opened.
Where to Get Small Hammer →6 known barriers
Hardened Bone Barriers
Hardened bone piles require a Large Hammer. Feed the Mold is the natural progression target once you have started exploring 2F, and the Skeleton Merchant is another source.
Where to Get Large Hammer →5 known barriers
Metal Bars
Thin metal-bar barriers require Wire Cutters, and the cutters break on use.
Find Wire Cutters →1 known barrier
Ghost Tentacles
One confirmed sealed-room route is blocked by Ghost Tentacles and consumes Cleansing Balm when cleared.
Find Cleansing Balm →Treat Hammers and Wire Cutters as exploration resources. Prioritize doors tied to quests, mysteries or deeper progression before spending tools on optional rooms.
Prioritize quest and mystery routes before optional sealed rooms. If you are following Secrets of the Catacombs or Hidden Shrines, spend Hammers on the rooms needed for those objectives first.
Good early sources: Lost Supplies, Skeletal Survey, Secrets of the Catacombs and the Skeleton Merchant. Catacombs battles and a few pickups also supply them, so an empty inventory is not a dead end.
Barrier finder
Small Hammer — Each stone door uses one Hammer.
This quest pays you back in exploration tools: it hands out more Small Hammers, then Recall Potions once you push further.
Hiding Skeleton can appear in one of multiple locations on Catacombs 3F. If the first location you check is empty, that does not mean the mystery is missing.
Mystery checklist
The confirmed mystery types used by the quest. Tick them off as you find them — the quest tracks 3 and 6 for its rewards.

Not every Catacombs quest is worth the same effort. This is the order that matches what each one actually gives you.
Do first
Small Hammer supply. These three make everything else cheaper to explore.
Lost Supplies
Find 3 Lost Supplies and return them to Tobias.
Skeletal Survey
Find Jess’s lost survey documents.

Once you have Hammers, these open more routes and push you deeper.
Opens hardened-bone progression. The Skeleton Merchant also stocks Large Hammers, so this is not your only route.
One of the two shrines sits inside the sealed-room route, so this quest is where your Hammers start paying off.
Hidden Shrines Guide →Found both but quest didn’t update? Talk to Jenna again →
This is the normal deeper-mine route rather than a chest grind.
Optional / caution
Startable, but do not treat these as normal completion targets yet.
OptionalExtreme Grind
False Idols
Possible rather than blocked, but its Bone Ingot and Verdite Bar requirements make it an unusually heavy grind.
Later progression required
Farming Supplies
The required Common Mushroom and Green Mushroom sources sit outside the normal current route.
StartableNot normal current completion
Forbidden Snack
Its Shyfish requirement connects to Catacombs fishing, which needs later progression.
Later progression required
The Strange Orb
The objective continues into the Old Woods at night, outside normal current secret-area progression.
Two different keys, two different gates. Mixing them up is the most common reason a Catacombs door seems bugged.
| Key | What it opens | Where it sits in progression |
|---|---|---|
| Small Mine Key | The rusted door on the Skeletal Depths / deeper mine route. | Normal current secret-area progression. |
| Catacombs Mine Key | A separate Catacombs Mines gate tied to later progression. | One confirmed barrier uses it; it is not part of the Skeletal Depths route. |
These are not the same item.
The Skeleton Merchant on Catacombs 2F is an important supply source while exploring the area. If you run low on exploration tools, check here before assuming you are stuck.
Tools the merchant is confirmed to stock:
You can start these from the Catacombs, but the thing they ask for lives outside the normal current route. Farming more Catacombs drops will not fix them.
Later progression required
You can start Farming Supplies from the Catacombs, but the required Common Mushroom and Green Mushroom sources are outside the normal current route. Do not keep farming Catacombs drops expecting those two ingredients to appear.
StartableNot normal current completion
You can start it, but its Shyfish requirement connects to Catacombs fishing, while the normal Quality Fishing Rod route requires later progression.
Later progression required
The quest continues into the Old Woods at night, so it leaves the normal current secret-area progression.
False Idols is not in the same category as the three quests above.
OptionalExtreme Grind
False Idols does not have the same hard later-area blocker. The route appears possible, but its Bone Ingot and Verdite Bar requirements make it an unusually heavy grind. It is not a next-step recommendation.
There is a Catacombs fishing spot, but normal access to the required Quality Fishing Rod belongs to later progression.
Do not treat Catacombs fishing as a normal early secret-area activity.
Some God Chambers are visible inside the Catacombs, but their required divine-favor progression belongs to later content. Seeing the door does not mean you missed a Catacombs-only key.
Entering the Catacombs does not require a password or a hidden code either — By the Gods is the normal route. If you are still outside, that quest is the only gate.
The barrier system catches most players at some point. These are the usual causes.
Entry, early tools, exploration and deeper progress. The three later-progression quests are deliberately kept off this list.
