The Farmer’s Path Quest Guide

How to start farming, grow Wheat, and open the Recipe Shop

Steam 1.0 check in progress

This route is based on the previously confirmed farming progression and is being checked against the full release.

The Farmer’s Path is the quest that opens farming in Welcome to Elderfield. Talk to Farmer Hans at the Farmhouse, grow Wheat on your crop plots, then return to him once you have harvested at least 1 Wheat. Finishing the quest opens crop farming and the Recipe Shop, and Hans hands you a Grinder along the way.

What the objective tracks

Growing and harvesting a Wheat crop, then reporting back to Hans.

It is recorded as a crop cycle rather than a hand-over, so grow the Wheat on your own plot. Then talk to Hans at the Farmhouse with the harvested crop to close it.

How to Start The Farmer’s Path

This is the first farming step, so there is very little standing between you and the quest.

No earlier task is required. The Farmer’s Path is the farming route’s opening step, so reaching the Farmhouse and speaking to Hans is enough to begin.

  1. Step 01

Talk to Farmer Hans at the Farmhouse

Head to the Farmhouse and speak with Farmer Hans. Starting the farming route begins The Farmer’s Path and gives you the first crop objective.

Hans hands over gear while the quest is running — you do not have to finish the quest first.

    • Grinder

A placeable processor. Place it in your Home, Farm, Workshop or Ranch to grind various items. You can also craft more Grinders at a Workbench later.

    • Cleansing Balm

Clears Ghost Tentacles when you interact with one. Useful well beyond the farm.

  2. Step 02

    Grow and Harvest Wheat

Buy Wheat Seed from the Farming Shop inside the Farmhouse, plant it on a crop plot, and wait for the crop to finish. Wheat Seed takes 4 days to grow, and each plot yields 1–3 Wheat.

    Quest requirement

    1 × harvested Wheat

Farming is unlocked by The Farmer’s Path itself, so if you can read this quest objective you can already plant the seed.

Already holding Wheat from an earlier harvest? The objective is recorded as a grow-and-harvest cycle, so run one Wheat through your own crop plot anyway. If the turn-in still will not register, the section below covers the real blockers.

  3. Step 03

    Return to Farmer Hans

With the Wheat harvested, go back to Farmer Hans at the Farmhouse and talk to him to finish The Farmer’s Path.

The quest does not complete on its own when the crop is harvested. It also does not complete from a distance — you have to be standing in the Farmhouse talking to him.

Where to Get Wheat

Wheat is a grown crop, so the route is short: buy the seed, plant it, wait, harvest.

Best early source

Grow Wheat Seed on your own crop plots

In the current data Wheat is recorded only as a farming crop. There is no shop, chest or quest that hands over Wheat directly, so growing it is the reliable route.

Wheat itself has a use beyond the quest: it can be processed in the Grinder you get from Hans. Wheat Seed, on the other hand, is only the input — it is not a substitute for the harvested crop.

Wheat or Wheat Seed?

This mix-up sends players to Hans with the wrong item, so it is worth one glance.

Correct

Wheat

  • The harvested crop
  • What the quest objective is about
  • Worth 24 gold, and used by the Grinder

Wrong

Wheat Seed

  • The seed you plant, not the crop
  • Costs 5 gold at the Farmhouse shop
  • Takes 4 days to turn into Wheat

Wheat Seed is how you get Wheat, not a replacement for it. Plant the seed, wait out the four days, then harvest before you go back to Hans.

Why Won’t Hans Take My Wheat?

These are the real reasons The Farmer’s Path stalls. If your situation is not listed here, the quest has not recorded a blocker for it.

My Wheat crop hasn’t finished growing
Wheat Seed takes 4 days to grow. Until the crop matures there is nothing to harvest, and the objective stays open no matter how many times you talk to Hans.
I grew the Wheat but the quest still didn’t finish
Growing is only half of it — you have to harvest the crop, then walk back to Farmer Hans at the Farmhouse. The objective does not close from the field.
I have Wheat Seed and Hans won’t accept it
Wheat Seed is the planting input. The quest is about the harvested Wheat, so plant the seed and bring back what grows from it.
I have Wheat from somewhere else and the quest is stuck
The objective is recorded as growing and harvesting a Wheat crop on your farm, and then returning to Hans. Wheat that never came out of a crop plot does not necessarily count, so run one full grow-and-harvest cycle if this step is still open.
I can’t start farming at all
Farming is opened by this quest, which means talking to Farmer Hans directly at the Farmhouse. Make sure you have reached him and started The Farmer’s Path before looking for crop plots or seed stock.

The Farmer’s Path Rewards

Two different things happen: Hans gives you items during the quest, and finishing it changes what the game will sell and let you grow.

Hans hands you (during the quest)

  • Grinder
  • Cleansing Balm

Unlocked by finishing it

  • Crop farming
  • Recipe Shop stock
  • The Skull Chalice eligibility

The Grinder is not a one-off souvenir: it is a craftable station item, so once you have a Workbench you can build more from Copper Bar, Wood and Stone.

What Does The Farmer’s Path Unlock?

Finishing the quest is what switches farming and the Recipe Shop on. The Grinder is separate — Hans gives that to you before you finish.

Crop farming

Every crop route in the current data is recorded as unlocking through The Farmer’s Path, so this quest is the gate for planting anything at all.

See crops and growth times →

Recipe Shop

Completing the quest makes the Recipe Shop in the Farmhouse stock available. It is a rotating stock rather than a fixed list; the first recorded unlock is the Slime Pizza recipe.

Farming progression

This is the step that makes Hans’s next farming quest, The Skull Chalice, eligible once the quest is marked complete.

What to Do After The Farmer’s Path

Your next farming step on this chain is The Skull Chalice. It becomes eligible when The Farmer’s Path is complete, but it does not appear the instant you finish — so do not stand next to Hans waiting for it.

The exact delay between finishing this quest and The Skull Chalice appearing is not recorded in the current data, so treat any specific timing you read elsewhere as unconfirmed.

Do not wait around for Hans. While this chain catches up, other early routes may already be open:

  • Tools and crafting: start Helping Molly to open the Workshop.
  • Mining: the Farm Mine is nearby and feeds copper and iron into the Workshop.
  • Fishing: the lakefront route opens early and runs in parallel with farming.

The Farmer’s Path FAQ

How do I start The Farmer’s Path?
Talk to Farmer Hans at the Farmhouse. No earlier task is required to begin it.
Where is Farmer Hans?
He is at the Farmhouse, on the farm. See the Farmer Hans page if you cannot find him.
Where do I get Wheat?
Buy Wheat Seed for 5 gold at the Farming Shop inside the Farmhouse, plant it on a crop plot, and harvest it after 4 days. Each plot yields 1–3 Wheat.
Why won’t Hans take my Wheat?
Check three things: the crop has actually finished growing (4 days), you have harvested it rather than just planted it, and you are handing over Wheat rather than Wheat Seed. The full list of real blockers is in the stuck section above.
What do you get for completing The Farmer’s Path?
Hans hands you a Grinder and Cleansing Balm during the quest. Finishing it unlocks crop farming and the Recipe Shop.
What quest comes after The Farmer’s Path?
The Skull Chalice. It becomes eligible once this quest is complete, but it is not handed to you instantly — the exact gap is not recorded in the current data.
Do I need to complete The Farmer’s Path before unlocking the Workshop?
No. These are parallel early routes. The Workshop is opened by Helping Molly, which has no recorded prerequisite pointing at farming.
Is the Recipe Shop Chef Elroy’s shop?
The current data records the Recipe Shop as a shop in the Farmhouse with a rotating stock. It does not tie that shop to a named owner, so we do not attribute it to a specific character.
